Patagonia is the sparsely populated region at the southern tip of South America, shared between Argentina and Chile, spanning windswept steppe east of the Andes and fjord-cut coastline and glaciers to the west. It takes its name from the Patagones, the term Ferdinand Magellan's expedition used for the region's Tehuelche inhabitants, and its southern extremity faces the Drake Passage toward Antarctica.
