Nunatsiavut

Nunatsiavut is an autonomous area in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, claimed by the Labradorimiut, or Labrador Inuit; its name means Our Beautiful Land in Inuktitut, reflecting the territory's founding purpose of preserving Inuit culture, language, and environmental stewardship. The settlement area lies in Labrador and extends toward the Quebec border, making it the southernmost recognized Inuit territory in Canada, and comprises five main communities: Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik, and Rigolet. It operates under a consensus government within Canada's parliamentary framework, with its own legislature, the Nunatsiavut Assembly, based in Hopedale and administrative functions centered in Nain, holding jurisdiction over health, education, and justice within its territory. The Labrador Inuit Association filed a land claim in 1977, and after decades of negotiation and a 2004 ratification vote, the Nunatsiavut constitution was formally adopted on 1 December 2005, with the first democratic election following in October 2006; as of 2021 the territory had 2,323 residents across its 15,800 square kilometers.
