Achaemenid Empire

Historical empire, Western Asia (550-330 BC)

The Achaemenid Empire was an ancient Iranian empire founded by Cyrus the Great of the Achaemenid dynasty in 550 BC. Based on the Iranian plateau, it grew from the region of Persis by defeating Media, Lydia and the Neo-Babylonian Empire, and at its peak covered roughly 5.5 million square kilometres, the largest empire of its time, stretching from the Balkans and Cyrenaica in the west to the Indus Valley in the east. It was repulsed from Scythia in 513 BC and from Greece in 492 to 490 BC and 480 to 479 BC, and in 330 BC it was conquered by Alexander the Great of Macedon.
