Sis (ancient city)

Sis was the capital of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, its ruins standing near the modern town of Kozan in Turkey Adana Province. The site began as a Hittite settlement in the second millennium BC and was recaptured from Arab forces by the Byzantine emperor Nikephoros II Phokas in 962. Rubenid baron Thoros I took the fortress for Armenian rule in 1113, and kings Levon I and Hetum I later expanded it into a large citadel with palaces and churches, its circuit walls running nearly three kilometers. Mamluk forces conquered and destroyed the city in 1375, ending the Armenian kingdom, though Armenian residents continued to live there until the town was abandoned in 1921.
