Qabala

Qabala is a city in Azerbaijan and the administrative center of Qabala District, with its municipality also including the village of Kusnat. It had a population of 12,808 at the 2011 census across a district area of 1,548 square kilometers, at an elevation of about 783 meters. The modern city was founded in 1537, and it was renamed after the independence of Azerbaijan in honor of the much older city of Gabala, the ancient capital of Caucasian Albania, whose archaeological remains show it functioned as a capital as early as the 4th century BC.
