A prefecture-level city in the northeast of China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on the west bank of the Li River, whose name means forest of sweet osmanthus after the fragrant trees found throughout the region. Renowned worldwide for its karst landscape scenery, celebrated in the Song-dynasty saying that Guilin's scenery is the best in the world, it was named a National Famous Historical and Cultural City in the program's first group; its 2020 census recorded a total population of 4,931,137, with 1,725,865 in its urban area.
