Karamay is a prefecture-level city in the north of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the People Republic of China, encircled by Tacheng Prefecture. Its name comes from the Uyghur language and translates as black oil, a reference to the petroleum reserves found in the surrounding region.
