Zhangye

Zhangye is a prefecture-level city in central Gansu Province, in the People's Republic of China, formerly romanized as Changyeh and known historically as Kanchow. It borders Inner Mongolia to the north and Qinghai to the south. Its central district, Ganzhou, served as an important frontier outpost during the Western Xia period and held strategic significance in the history of western China. The 2010 census recorded a population of about 1,199,515, which the 2020 census put at roughly 1,131,016. The city covers about 42,000 square kilometers and is seated at Ganzhou District.
