Bhilai

Bhilai is a metropolitan city in the Durg district of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, on the Shivnath River at an elevation of 297 meters. Known as the Steel City of India, it developed into a major industrial center after a 1955 agreement between India and the Soviet Union established the Bhilai Steel Plant, whose first blast furnace was commissioned in 1959. The combined Durg-Bhilai Nagar urban agglomeration has a population exceeding one million, making it the second most populous area in Chhattisgarh after the state capital Raipur. Beyond steel, Bhilai is a significant educational center, home to institutions including the Indian Institute of Technology Bhilai and the Bhilai Institute of Technology.
