Bikaner

Bikaner is a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan, in the Thar Desert about 330 kilometers northwest of Jaipur. It was founded in 1488 by Rao Bika, a Rathore Rajput chief, and takes its name from its founder; Bikaner served as the capital of the former princely Bikaner State and today is the administrative headquarters of Bikaner District and Bikaner division. The 2011 Census recorded a population of 644,406, making it the fourth largest city in Rajasthan. The Ganga Canal, completed in 1928, and the Indira Gandhi Canal, completed in 1987, both transformed irrigation across the surrounding desert region, and the city is nicknamed the Red City.
