Fatehpur Sikri is a city in Agra District, Uttar Pradesh, India, about 35.7 kilometers from Agra, with 32,905 residents at the 2011 census. Founded in 1571 by the Mughal emperor Akbar as his empire's capital on the site of the village of Sikri, it is where Akbar's son Jahangir was born in 1569, prompting construction of a religious compound honoring the Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chishti who had predicted the birth; abandoned by Akbar in 1585 and deserted by 1610, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 for landmarks including the 54 meter Buland Darwaza gate, the Jama Masjid and the Panch Mahal palace.
