Ghaziabad is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, part of the Delhi National Capital Region and the largest city in western Uttar Pradesh. Its population was about 1.73 million at the 2011 census. Founded in 1740 by the Mughal official Ghazi-ud-Din II as Ghaziuddinnagar, the city is split by the Hindon River and is known as the "Gateway of Uttar Pradesh" for its position on the main route into the state from Delhi, as well as a major rail junction for North India.
