A city in the Indian state of West Bengal on the western bank of the Hooghly River, directly across from its twin city of Kolkata. It functions as a major industrial and transportation hub and is Kolkata's gateway by rail and road, linked across the river by Howrah Bridge and served by Howrah railway station.
