Junagadh is a city in the Indian state of Gujarat at the foot of Mount Girnar, with about 465,000 residents as of 2025, up from 319,462 at the 2011 census. Its Uparkot Fort was built around 319 BC under the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta, and the city preserves rock edicts of Ashoka dated to about 250 BC along with Sanskrit inscriptions from the 2nd century AD; ruled by a line of Nawabs from 1730, it acceded to Pakistan in 1947 before India intervened and a February 1948 plebiscite returned it overwhelmingly to India, and it is now Gujarat's seventh largest city and home to Junagadh Agricultural University.
