Kolhapur is a city on the banks of the Panchganga River in the southern part of the Indian state of Maharashtra, a historically and culturally significant urban center known as Dakshin Kashi, or the Kashi of the South, for its spiritual heritage and its ancient Mahalaxmi shrine, also known as Ambabai. It is renowned for the handcrafted leather sandals called Kolhapuri chappal, which received geographical indication status in 2019; before India's independence in 1947 it was a princely state under the Bhosale Chhatrapati of the Maratha Confederacy, and today it is an important hub for the Marathi film industry. At the 2011 census the city had a population of 561,489, rising to 985,736 across its metropolitan area, ranking 80th in India and 11th in Maharashtra.
