Kollam is an ancient seaport and the fourth largest city in the Indian state of Kerala, on the southern Malabar Coast at the banks of Ashtamudi Lake, about 71 kilometres northwest of Thiruvananthapuram. It is one of India's oldest continuously inhabited cities, with a history as a maritime trading centre reaching back to the Phoenicians and Romans, and it serves today as a gateway to the Kerala backwaters.
