Panaji is the capital of the Indian state of Goa and the headquarters of North Goa district, situated on the southern bank of the Mandovi river estuary in the Tiswadi sub-district. Formerly known as Nova Goa, it was the territorial capital of Portuguese India before becoming Goa's state capital in 1843. The city proper had a population of 40,017 at the 2011 census, with its metropolitan area home to 114,759 people, and is described as Goa's largest urban agglomeration.
