Puducherry

Puducherry, historically known as Pondicherry, is the capital and largest city of the Indian union territory of Puducherry, on the southeast coast between the Bay of Bengal and Tamil Nadu. Founded in 1674 and long a French colonial possession, it retains that heritage in its urban planning and architecture and is nicknamed the Paris of the East. The 2011 census recorded a population of 244,377, with Tamil as the official language alongside English and French.
