The capital of the Indian state of Jharkhand and its largest district by population, formed when Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar's Chota Nagpur and Santhal Parganas divisions on 15 November 2000. The city was the centre of the Jharkhand movement that campaigned for a separate tribal state, and it has since been selected as one of a hundred Indian cities developed under the national Smart Cities Mission.
