Ujjain

Ujjain, also known as Ujjayini, is a city in Ujjain district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is the fifth-largest city in Madhya Pradesh by population and serves as the administrative and religious centre of Ujjain district and Ujjain division. It is one of the Hindu pilgrimage centres of the Sapta Puri, known for the Kumbh Mela, called locally the Simhastha, held every twelve years, and the temple of Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga stands at the centre of the city. Ujjain has been one of the most prominent trade and political centres of the Indian subcontinent from the era of the ancient Mahajanapadas until British colonisation.
