Banyuwangi is a large town at the eastern tip of Java, Indonesia, capital of Banyuwangi Regency, backed by the Ijen Plateau and facing the Bali Strait, with an estimated population of about 121,500 in mid-2024. Once capital of the Kingdom of Blambangan, the last Hindu kingdom on Java, it survived the Mataram Sultanate's expansion in the early 1600s before falling under Dutch colonial control in the 1700s, and in 1871 it was linked by undersea cable to the Australian telegraph line at Darwin.
