Sampit

Sampit is a town on the Sampit River in East Kotawaringin Regency, Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia, with a mid-2024 population estimate of 167,850 across 397.99 square kilometers, though it holds no independent administrative status of its own. Once a timber port that has since diversified its economy, it remained under Japanese occupation until 1946 and became known internationally for the Sampit conflict of February 2001, a ten day outbreak of ethnic violence between Dayak and Madurese communities.
