Bandar Abbas

Bandar Abbas is a port city on the southern coast of Iran at the narrow Strait of Hormuz, directly across from the Musandam Governorate of Oman, serving as capital of Hormozgan province, its county and district. The 2016 census recorded 526,664 residents. The city has been a port since at least 600 BC and was known at various times as Gamrun and Gombroon under Portuguese, Dutch and English control before Shah Abbas the Great renamed it in the seventeenth century. It remains strategically important today as the location of the main base and headquarters of the Iranian Navy and as a historic commercial link to India.
