Birjand

Birjand is the capital of South Khorasan province in eastern Iran, serving as administrative center of Birjand County and its central district. The 2016 census recorded 203,636 residents. The first documented mention of the city appears in the thirteenth century geographic work Mojem Alboldan by Yaqut Homavi, which called it the most beautiful town in the Qohestan region, while the surrounding area holds older historical remains such as the Lakh Mazar inscriptions. Known as the City of Pines and the City of Culture, Birjand is noted for exporting saffron, barberry, jujube and handmade carpets, and for its research and educational institutions.
