Bojnord

Bojnord is the capital of North Khorasan province in northeastern Iran, about 701 kilometers from Tehran and 242 kilometers from Mashhad, at an elevation of 1,070 meters. The 2016 census recorded 228,931 residents in the urban area and 335,931 in the wider metropolitan area. Local tradition holds that the area has been inhabited since the Mongol invasions of the thirteenth century, and the city itself may have been established by the Safavids as a settlement for the Kurdish Shadiyan tribe to strengthen the frontier. Bojnord has been repeatedly damaged and rebuilt after major earthquakes in 1896, 1929 and a magnitude 6.5 quake in 1997.
