Gorgan

Gorgan is a city in Golestan province in northeastern Iran, about 400 kilometers from Tehran and roughly 30 kilometers from the Caspian Sea, serving as the provincial capital. The 2016 census recorded 350,676 residents, the 24th largest population among cities in Iran. Formerly known as Astarabad, the area corresponds to the ancient city of Zadracarta, once the largest city of the classical region of Hyrcania, and it contains Neolithic and Chalcolithic archaeological sites as well as the Great Wall of Gorgan, a Parthian and Sasanian era defensive wall ranked the second largest of its kind in the world. The city has a subtropical Mediterranean climate with hot humid summers and cool wet winters.
