Hamadan

Hamadan is a mountainous city in western Iran, about 360 kilometers southwest of Tehran in the foothills of Alvand Mountain, serving as capital of Hamadan province, county and district. The 2016 census recorded 554,406 residents, the thirteenth largest population among cities in Iran. Believed to be among the oldest cities in Iran, it was known in antiquity as Ecbatana, capital of the Median Empire around 700 BCE and later a summer capital under the Achaemenid dynasty. Tourist attractions include the Ganj Nameh inscription and monuments to the philosopher Avicenna and the poet Baba Taher.
