Karaj is a city in the Central District of Karaj County, capital of Alborz province in Iran, with evidence of habitation dating back to the Bronze Age. Located just west of Tehran at the foot of the Alborz Mountains, Karaj has grown rapidly since the mid-twentieth century into one of Iran's largest cities, functioning largely as an industrial and residential extension of the greater Tehran metropolitan area.
