Kermanshah

Kermanshah is the capital of Kermanshah province in western Iran, about 525 kilometers west of Tehran. The 2016 census recorded 946,651 residents in the urban area and 1,083,833 in the metropolitan area. The city was founded in 390 AD by the Sasanian ruler Bahram IV, whose title King of Kerman gave the city its name, and it flourished as a cultural and commercial center, notably under Seljuk rule in the eleventh century. Nearby sites include the Sasanian rock reliefs of Taq-e Bostan and the Behistun Inscription, a UNESCO World Heritage Site important for the decipherment of cuneiform script.
