Rasht

Rasht is a city in Gilan province on the Caspian Sea coast of Iran, serving as capital of the province, its county and its central district. The 2016 census recorded 679,995 residents, making it the eleventh most populous city in Iran and the most populous city in the north of the country. Known historically as a border city, Rasht served as the gateway from Iran to Russia and Europe, played a major role in the Constitutional Revolution, and was home to the first public library in Iran and one of the first schools for girls in Iran. Its humid subtropical climate and heavy rainfall have earned it the nickname City of Silver Rain, and in 2015 UNESCO recognized it as a creative city of gastronomy.
