Sanandaj

Sanandaj is the capital of Kurdistan province in western Iran, with a population of about 850,000, making it the second largest Kurdish city and the twentieth largest city overall in Iran. Although founded only around 250 years ago, it developed into a historic center of Kurdish cultural and intellectual life, particularly known for its traditions of Kurdish music, poetry and carpet weaving, and since 2019 UNESCO has recognized it as a Creative City of Music. The city sustained damage during the Iran-Iraq War but has since grown into an important urban center.
