Zahedan

Zahedan is the capital of Sistan and Baluchestan province in southeastern Iran, near the borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan in a region inhabited by Baloch people, about 41 kilometers from the point where the three countries meet. The 2016 census recorded 587,730 urban residents. First mentioned in 1849 under the name Duzdab, meaning water sink, the settlement was renamed Zahedan in 1929 during a visit by Reza Shah, after a medieval city called Zaidan, and it grew rapidly in the early twentieth century from a small village into the provincial administrative center. It has a hot arid climate with very low precipitation and extremely hot summers.
