Zanjan

Zanjan is the capital of Zanjan province in northwestern Iran, about 298 kilometers from Tehran on the main highway toward Tabriz and Turkey and roughly 125 kilometers from the Caspian Sea. The 2016 census recorded 430,871 residents, the twentieth largest population among cities in Iran. The city has ancient roots, with accounts placing its founding in the Sasanian period and describing it as a significant center in medieval times. A regional survey by the news agency ISNA found that the population of Zanjan reported the highest level of happiness among the thirty provinces of Iran.
