A major city in central Iraq and the capital of Karbala Governorate, with a population of around 800,000 as of 2024 making it the second-largest city in central Iraq after Baghdad. Located a few miles east of Lake Milh, also called Razzaza Lake, it is one of the principal political, spiritual and cultural centers of Shia Islam.
