Kirkuk is a major city in northern Iraq, capital of Kirkuk Governorate, home to a mixed population of Kurds, Iraqi Turkmens and Arabs. Its population was about 1.25 million in 2024. Sitting atop major oil reserves near the historic Baba Gurgur oil field, Kirkuk is one of Iraq's constitutionally disputed territories, with a referendum meant to determine whether it should join the Kurdistan Region or remain under central Iraqi authority never completed since it was called for in 2007; Kurdish leaders have described it as the "Jerusalem of Kurdistan."
