Nazareth is the largest city in Israel's Northern District, set in the hill country of Lower Galilee about 25 kilometers from the Sea of Galilee and roughly nine kilometers west of Mount Tabor. The city occupies a natural bowl-shaped basin ringed by hills whose elevations range from about 320 meters up to roughly 488 meters at the surrounding hilltops, with the city center itself sitting near 347 meters above sea level. This basin setting gives Nazareth a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, moderated by its inland hill elevation compared with the nearby Jezreel Valley and coastal plain. As of 2024 the city had a population of 75,704, concentrated within the bowl and spreading up the surrounding slopes, and its hill-country location has long made it a natural staging point along routes connecting the Galilee lake basin with the coastal and valley lowlands to the west and south.
