Rishon LeZion

Rishon LeZion is a city in Israel on the central coastal plain, about 8 kilometers south of Tel Aviv. It is part of the Gush Dan metropolitan area and is the fifth-largest city in the country, with a 2024 population of 259,275. It was founded in 1882 by Jewish settlers from the Russian Empire who took part in the First Aliyah, and is considered the first settlement founded in Israel by the New Yishuv and the second Jewish agricultural settlement in Ottoman Syria in the nineteenth century, after Petah Tikva. Its name comes from a verse in the Book of Isaiah, and the municipality belongs to Forum 15, an association of Israeli cities that are financially independent of national development or balancing grants.
