Abiko, Chiba

Abiko is a city in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in the Kanto region roughly 30 to 40 kilometers from central Tokyo. The area has been inhabited since the Japanese Paleolithic period, and during the Edo period Abiko served as a river port and post station; from the Taisho into the early Showa era it became known as a haven for literary and artistic figures, earning the nickname Kamakura in the north as a center of the Shirakabaha literary group. Abiko gained city status in 1970 and has since become a Tokyo commuter town, with an estimated 2024 population of 131,183.
