Asahikawa

Asahikawa is a core city in Kamikawa Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan, and serves as the subprefecture's capital and the second largest city in Hokkaido after Sapporo. Founded on August 1, 1922, it had approximately 321,906 residents as of July 2023 and developed historically as an industrial center for lumber, brewing, furniture, and paper pulp production. The city is known for the Asahiyama Zoo, Asahikawa ramen, and a nearby ski resort, and received UNESCO Design City status through the Creative Cities Network in 2019. Asahikawa also holds the record for Japan's lowest ever recorded temperature, minus 41.0 degrees Celsius, set on January 25, 1902.
