Fujiwara-kyo was the imperial capital of Japan for sixteen years, from 694 to 710, located in Yamato Province after being moved from nearby Asuka. It remained the capital until the seat relocated to Heijo-kyo, present-day Nara, and was the first Japanese capital built as a planned city on a square grid pattern modeled after Chang'an, the capital of Tang dynasty China.
