Hakodate

Hakodate is a city and port in Oshima Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan, the subprefecture's capital and Hokkaido's third-largest city after Sapporo and Asahikawa, with a January 2024 population of about 239,813. It became Japan's first port opened to foreign trade in 1854 under the Convention of Kanagawa and was long the most important port in northern Japan until the Great Fire of 1934 destroyed around two-thirds of its buildings; the Hokkaido Shinkansen, opened in 2016 through the undersea Seikan Tunnel, now links it to Honshu.
