Sasebo

Sasebo is a city in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, on the island of Kyushu, and is the second largest city in the prefecture after Nagasaki itself. It grew from a small fishing village under the historical Hirado Domain into a major naval center after Admiral Togo Heihachiro chose it as a navy base site in 1886, and it was raised to city status in 1902. As of April 2024 it had a population of about 230,873 across roughly 426 square kilometers, and it was designated a core city in 2016.
