Shimonoseki

Shimonoseki is a city in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, situated at the westernmost point of the island of Honshu. It is the largest city in Yamaguchi Prefecture and the fifth largest in the Chugoku region, with a population of 248,193 as of June 2023 across 716.18 square kilometers. The city was established as Akamagaseki on April 1, 1889, renamed Shimonoseki on June 1, 1902, and designated a core city in October 2005. Nicknamed the home of fugu, it is the largest harvester of pufferfish in Japan and has long served as a gateway port between Honshu and the Asian continent.
