Toyama is the capital city of Toyama Prefecture, Japan, and a core city of the Chubu region, on the coast of the Sea of Japan in central Honshu, about 200 kilometres north of Nagoya. As of June 2019 it had approximately 415,844 residents in 176,643 households across 1,241.77 square kilometres. The national government has designated it an environmental model city for its greenhouse gas reduction efforts. Toyama was historically known for medicine and washi paper production in the Edo period, grew into a centre of heavy industry in the Meiji era, and was almost completely destroyed by firebombing on August 1 and 2, 1945.
