Jhansi State was a princely state in Bundelkhand, ruled by the Maratha Newalkar dynasty. The fortified town of Jhansi was its capital. It was under the Peshwas from 1728 to 1804 and then, under the suzerainty of British India, an independent princely state until 1853, when the British took it over under the Doctrine of Lapse. Rani Laxmi Bai, one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, reclaimed the state and ruled it from August 1857 to June 1858, and its flag was a saffron banner associated with Hinduism. The rebellion brought the state to its end in 1858.
