Aktobe is a city in western Kazakhstan and the administrative center of Aktobe Region, situated where the Kargala and Ilek rivers meet; it was founded in 1869 as a Russian military fort and was renamed from Aktyubinsk to Aktobe in 1999 to promote the Kazakh language. It is the fourth-largest city in Kazakhstan and the largest in the country's western region, with an economy built on coal mining, metallurgy and oil and gas extraction. Its population was about 560,820 in 2023.
