Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan, lying in the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains in the country's southeast, near the border with Kyrgyzstan. Its population passed 2.35 million as of January 2026. Almaty served as Kazakhstan's capital from 1929 until 1997, when the seat of government moved to what is now Astana, but it remains the country's financial center, generating about a fifth of national GDP and government revenue and roughly three-fifths of bank credit. UNESCO named it a Creative City of Music in 2017.
