Ridder

Ridder is a mining city in East Kazakhstan Region, in the southwestern Altai Mountains along the Ulba River. It grew from a deposit of gold, silver and other metals found in 1786 by the officer Philip Ridder, after whom it is named, and became a major Soviet-era producer of lead and zinc; during the Second World War it supplied about half of the Soviet Union's high-quality lead. The city was called Leninogorsk from 1941 to 2002, when it reverted to its original name.
