Sungai Petani, often shortened to Sg. Petani or SP, is a town in the Kuala Muda District of Kedah, Malaysia. The population of its municipal area is larger than that of Kedah's state capital, Alor Setar, so the town outweighs the seat of government in numbers of residents. It is located about 55 kilometres south of Alor Setar and about 33 kilometres northeast of George Town, the capital city of the neighbouring state of Penang, which places it between the two and within reach of both.
