Altai

Altai is the capital of Govi-Altai Province in western Mongolia, straddling the edge of the Gobi Desert where the Altai Mountains rise from the sand. At an elevation of 2,213 meters it is the highest city in Mongolia, and it lies within the Yesonbulag District roughly 1,000 kilometers southwest of Ulaanbaatar. Population figures range from about 15,800 residents in 2008 to 17,617 in a later count. The city's airport serves regular flights to Arvaikheer, Bayankhongor and Ulaanbaatar.
